National Police Block Marchers
Bolivia-Weekly,  22-September-2011: Bolivia's national police have blocked the 1,000 indigenous marchers from continuing to La Paz. Police announced that the peaceful march may not continue for safety reasons but did not explain further. A counter march of 300 people aligned with the government set off dynamite 200 meters away. The was was blocked yesterday by 200 national police directed by Government Ministry official Boris Villena.

Vice President Alvaro Garcia Linera said that the marchers could come negotiate in San Borja and justified blocking the tribal marchers because their demands would hurt families who squat on jungle lands. He said that the marchers don't want Bolivia's two social security payments- a payment no made by the marchers.

Linera said that the police blocking the marchers' progress were there not to block the progress of the march but, "to prevent any confrontations between our indigenous brothers from the lowlands and the highlands. Bolivia's People's Defender said that the Amazon highway contract through the Isiboro Securé National Park- the issue which caused the tribal march- is unconstitutional while Garcia Linera said that Bolivia's legislative assembly had approved it.
